What religion is Lyle Foster?
Lyle Foster is a South African professional footballer who is a devout Christian. In 2026, he took a major step in his spiritual journey by going public with his faith through a baptism, which was supported and assisted by his Burnley FC teammate Florentino Luís. Lyle Foster plays for EFL Championship club Burnley, and he has played for the football clubs Orlando Pirates (2017–2019), Monaco (2019–2020), Vitória de Guimarães (2020–2022), and Westerlo (2022–2023). He has been a member of the South African national team since 2018 and has won more than 30 caps for the team. He began his senior career with the South African football club Orlando Pirates during the 2017–18 season.
Lyle Foster is currently under a contract that reportedly runs until June 2028, following his €7 million move to Burnley in 2023. According to various sources, his base pay at Burnley stood around £32,500 per week (≈ $43,642) and about £1.69 million per year (≈ $2.2 million).
Early life
Lyle Brent Foster was born on September 3, 2000, in Noordgesig, Soweto, South Africa. He began his youth football career with the Augusto Palacios Apprentice Academy in 2011. In 2015, 15-year-old Lyle was promoted to the Orlando Pirates Football Club youth development structures. He played on the Orlando Pirates youth squads, and by the 2017–18 season, he was promoted to their senior first team at just 17 years old. During his time with the club, Foster scored against Polokwane City to become the youngest goalscorer in Orlando Pirates history.
Club career
In January 2019, Lyle signed a 4.5-year professional contract with AS Monaco. He made his senior debut on August 9, 2019, during the 2019–20 Ligue 1 season opener as a starter, and three weeks later, he joined Cercle Brugge on a season-long loan. In August 2020, he became a permanent signing for Portuguese side Vitória de Guimarães, and by the end of his time in Europe’s developmental squads, he had shown enough promise to earn a loan move to Belgian side Westerlo. It was soon reported that several clubs were impressed by his breakthrough in Belgium, where he helped Westerlo secure promotion by scoring five goals in his first 23 appearances. In June 2022, Westerlo announced that Lyle had signed a permanent three-year contract with them after exercising their purchase option. During the 2022–23 season, Foster scored eight goals in his first 21 league matches.
In January 2023, he achieved a dream move to English football when Burnley signed him to a four-and-a-half-year contract. On October 26, 2023, Lyle announced his long-term commitment to the club, and Burnley announced that they had signed him to a new five-year contract extension running until June 2028. Foster suffered from a recurrence of a mental health issue in late 2023, and then he made his emotional Burnley return in December 2023 during a Premier League match against Everton. Later that month, he scored a crucial goal for the team in their final fixture of the year against Aston Villa. Foster’s Premier League debut had taken place earlier on August 11, 2023, and by the conclusion of his first top-flight English season, he had established himself as a primary forward for the Clarets.
Lyle was a South African youth international, and his senior international debut occurred in June 2018. After being selected for South Africa’s squads competing on the continental stage, Foster became a dependable target man for Bafana Bafana, scoring vital goals during their Africa Cup of Nations and FIFA World Cup qualification campaigns.
Personal life
Lyle’s father, Lance, quit his job to support his football dreams, while Orlando Pirates Chairman Irvin Khoza personally stepped in to pay his salary during his early developmental stages.
Aside from football, Lyle is actively involved in charity work, notably supporting the Johannesburg-based Humanitarian Empowerment Fund, which focuses on food security, education, and community rebuilding.
