What religion is Hugo Ekitiké?

Hugo Ekitiké is a French professional footballer who is a practicing Muslim. In a Liverpool FC official Ramadan video (February 2026), he stated, “I’m Hugo Ekitike, and I’m Muslim.” He described Ramadan as a time to get closer to his religion and his people, make good actions, fast, share iftar with family, and draw nearer to God. Hugo Ekitiké is considered one of the world’s best strikers, and he has played for football clubs including Reims, Paris Saint-Germain, Eintracht Frankfurt, and Liverpool. He has been a member of the France national team since 2025 and has won more than 8 caps for the team. In 2025, Ekitiké signed a €95 million contract with Liverpool, breaking the all-time club record sale for Eintracht Frankfurt.

In 2021, Ekitiké began playing for France’s under-20 team, with which he won the Tournoi Maurice Revello the following year. In 2025, he received his first call-up to the French senior team, replacing the injured Rayan Cherki.

Salary

Hugo Ekitiké’s current contract, signed in 2025 and running until 2031, reportedly pays him around £10.4 million per year.

Early life

Hugo Timothée Ekitike was born on 20 June 2002 in Reims, Marne, France, to a Cameroonian father and a French mother. A skilled footballer from an early age, he joined the youth club Cormontreuil FC in 2008, for which he played until 2013 before joining the academy at Stade de Reims.

Club career

Current Club: Liverpool (since July 2025)

Reims

Ekitiké progressed through the youth ranks at his hometown club Stade de Reims before signing his first professional contract in 2020. He spent half a season on loan at Danish side Vejle Boldklub before returning to establish himself in Reims’ first team. In the 2021–22 season, he scored 10 goals in 24 Ligue 1 appearances, a breakout campaign that attracted the attention of several elite clubs, including Newcastle United.

Paris Saint-Germain

On 16 July 2022, Ekitiké joined Ligue 1 side Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) on a season-long loan, which was made permanent the following year for €35 million. On August 6, 2022, Ekitiké made his PSG debut as a substitute in a 5-0 league victory away to Clermont. During his loan spell, he scored three goals in 25 Ligue 1 games, winning two Trophées des Champions and the Ligue 1 title, but with PSG’s star-studded frontline limiting his opportunities, a move was inevitable.

Eintracht Frankfurt

On 1 February 2024, Ekitiké joined Eintracht Frankfurt on loan, with the German club making the move permanent that summer for €16.5 million. In his first full season, he scored 22 goals and claimed 12 assists in 48 appearances, helping Frankfurt secure a third-place Bundesliga finish and Champions League qualification. At the end of the season, Ekitiké was named in the 2024–25 Bundesliga Team of the Season.

Liverpool

Ekitiké signed with Liverpool on a six-year contract in the summer of 2025. He had immediate success with the club when he debuted as a starter in August. In the 2025–26 season, he made his competitive debut in the FA Community Shield and has gone on to register 11 goals and four assists in 28 Premier League appearances. He also scored three goals in 12 Champions League games.

International career

Ekitiké represented France at the under-20 and under-21 levels, winning the Tournoi Maurice Revello with the under-20 side in 2022. He received his first senior call-up to the France squad in 2025, scoring one goal in six World Cup qualifying appearances and one goal in two friendlies. Unfortunately, Ekitiké won’t be available for the upcoming 2026 FIFA World Cup after suffering a ruptured Achilles tendon during his club’s Champions League defeat against Paris Saint-Germain.

Personal life

Ekitiké is qualified to represent Cameroon through his father, but he chose France early in his career.

Away from football, he enjoys listening to music, watching series such as Game of Thrones and Breaking Bad, and traveling during the off-season.
