What religion is Nuno Mendes?

Nuno Mendes is a Portuguese professional footballer who is a Christian and follows the Roman Catholic faith. Nuno Mendes is considered to be one of the best left-backs in the world, and he has played for Sporting CP (2020–2022) and Paris Saint-Germain (2025–present). He has been a member of the Portugal national team since 2021 and has won more than 43 caps for the team. With PSG, he won Ligue 1 titles in 2022, 2023, 2024, 2025, and 2026 and the UEFA Champions League in 2025. At the senior level, Mendes helped Portugal win the 2024–25 UEFA Nations League.

Nuno Mendes is currently under a contract that reportedly runs until June 30, 2029, following his €38 million permanent move to Paris Saint-Germain in 2022. According to various sources, his base pay at PSG stands around €209,000 per week ($243,711) and about €10.9 million per year ($12.7 million).

Early life

Nuno Alexandre Tavares Mendes was born on June 19, 2002, in Sintra, Portugal. He is the son of Angolan parents, and he grew up in the suburbs of Lisbon. He got into football very early in life, joining the local club FC Despertar when he was nine and eventually playing in the youth system of Sporting CP.

Sporting CP

Mendes joined Sporting CP’s youth academy at age ten after being spotted by a school teacher named Bruno Botelho, who invited him to play for local club Despertar, from where he quickly caught the attention of big clubs, including Benfica, Porto, and Sporting CP. He made his senior debut for Sporting in a 1–0 Primeira Liga home win against Paços de Ferreira on 12 June 2020, and in his debut season, he won a double of the Primeira Liga and Taça da Liga while being named in the Primeira Liga Team of the Year.

Paris Saint-Germain

In August 2021, Mendes joined PSG on loan before the move was made permanent for €38 million in June 2022. He quickly established himself as one of the best left-backs in world football, winning five consecutive Ligue 1 titles, four Trophées des Champions, two Coupes de France, and the UEFA Champions League in 2024–25, contributing to PSG’s historic continental treble that season. During his first season at PSG, Mendes was nominated for the Young Player of the Year award and named to the Team of the Year alongside two of his teammates, Ousmane Dembélé and Vitinha.

In the 2025–26 season, he won the UEFA Super Cup against Tottenham Hotspur in August 2025 and the Trophée des Champions against Marseille in January 2026. In the current 2025–26 Ligue 1 season, he has recorded four goals and five assists in 20 appearances and has also contributed two goals and two assists across 16 Champions League appearances, including tonight’s final against Arsenal (May 30, 2026).

International career

In addition to his club success, Mendes has had an incredible international career representing Portugal. He has represented Portugal at the under-16, under-17, under-18, under-19, and under-21 levels before making his senior debut in 2021. He was part of Portugal’s squads for the 2022 FIFA World Cup and UEFA Euro 2024, where Portugal won all ten of their qualifying matches before being eliminated in the quarter-finals by France. In 2025, he helped Portugal win the UEFA Nations League and was named player of the match and best player of the tournament, a landmark individual honor that underlined his status as one of the world’s premier left-backs. He is part of Portugal’s 2026 FIFA World Cup squad heading into the tournament in the USA.

Honors

In 2025, Mendes was named the UEFA Nations League Finals MVP. Additionally, he was also selected for the Primeira Liga Team of the Year, the Ligue 1 Team of the Season, and the UEFA Champions League Team of the Season.
