What religion is Yan Diomande?

Yan Diomande is an Ivorian professional footballer who is a practicing Muslim. Yan Diomande plays the position of a winger for Leipzig of the Bundesliga football league as well as for the Ivory Coast national team. He began his senior career with the Spanish La Liga side Leganés during the 2025 season before signing a five-year contract with Bundesliga side RB Leipzig. Diomande has never won a title in his professional career, however, in 2026 he was named Bundesliga Rookie of the Season.

Contracts, Salary & Career Earnings

RB Leipzig signed Diomande in July 2025 after paying a transfer fee of €20 million. Given his raw pace, lethal dribbling, and incredible ceiling, that price tag was immediately viewed as a bargain for one of the most exciting prospects in modern soccer. His first RB Leipzig contract pays a base salary of around €14,423 per week, which equals roughly €750,000 per year.

Diomande’s contract became even more lucrative because of its bonus structure. In addition to his base wage, he earns major performance incentives tied to appearances, goals, and personal achievements. Because he adapted so fast, winning the Bundesliga Rookie of the Season award, many of those milestones were triggered instantly. With performance add-ons factored in, his annual on-field earnings under his current deal are estimated closer to €940,000.

The long-term deal binds him to the German club until June 2030. However, following his historic breakout season, Europe’s elite clubs have launched massive pursuits. Powerhouses like Liverpool are reportedly preparing five-year contract offers worth up to £5.5 million per year to lure him away, meaning the teenager’s total career earnings are already poised to skyrocket into the tens of millions.

Early career

Yan Diomande was born on November 14, 2006, in Abidjan, Ivory Coast, and moved to the United States at a young age. He was 15 when he left the Ivory Coast, too young to sign a professional contract in Europe, and the reasons for his American detour were complex. He played high school soccer for the Yulee Hornets in Florida from 2020 to 2022 before joining DME Academy in Daytona Beach. His performances at DME led his affiliate team AS Frenzi to an undefeated season and a UPSL Premier Division title in 2023, with Diomande named the STARI Player of the Year.

In October 2023, Diomande had a trial at Rangers in Scotland but ultimately did not sign, returning to DME to continue his development until the right opportunity arrived.

Leganés

In November 2024, Diomande signed his first professional contract with Spanish La Liga club Leganés, initially placed with the reserve side, Leganés B, in the Tercera Federación before forcing his way into first-team consideration within months. He made three appearances for Leganés B before his promotion to the senior squad was confirmed. Diomande made his La Liga debut in March 2025 as a late substitute against Real Madrid. Subsequently, he made 10 La Liga appearances in total, scoring twice and providing one assist. Before departing for Leipzig, Diomande made his final appearance for the club on the last day of the season in a loss to Real Valladolid, a match that saw Leganés relegated.

RB Leipzig

From Leganés, Diomande moved to the Bundesliga side RB Leipzig on a five-year contract with a €20 million release clause. A month later, on August 22, 2025, he made his competitive debut against Bayern Munich on the opening day of the Bundesliga season. Moving on, he opened his account for the club in a 4–2 DFB-Pokal win over SV Sandhausen on August 16 and scored his first Bundesliga goal in a 6–0 demolition of Augsburg on October 25. Later that year, on 6 December, he scored three goals in 18 second-half minutes against Eintracht Frankfurt, becoming the second-youngest player in Bundesliga history to score a hat-trick at 19 years and 22 days old, breaking a record that had stood since Walter Bechtold in 1965. Diomande had a great achievement with Leipzig, including being named Bundesliga Rookie of the Month for December 2025, winning the Bundesliga Player of the Month award for April 2026, and breaking the record as the fourth-youngest player in Bundesliga history to reach double figures for goals in a single season at the age of 19 and 114 days. To sum it up, he finished the 2025-26 campaign with 12 goal contributions in 33 Bundesliga appearances, helping Leipzig to a third-place finish and Champions League qualification before being named the Bundesliga Rookie of the Season. Liverpool and PSG have both been reported to be monitoring him closely, with Leipzig believed to value him at over €100 million.

International career

Diomande began his career with the Ivory Coast national football team at the youth level, playing for the under-17 and under-23 teams. His first senior call-up came when Ivory Coast coach Emerse Faé included him in his squad for two crucial 2026 World Cup qualifying matches in October 2025, against Seychelles and Kenya. He made his senior debut on October 10 in a 7–0 win over Seychelles, scoring a stunning left-footed strike into the far corner in the 55th minute. Four days later on October 14, he scored again with a right-footed rocket from outside the box in a 3–0 victory over Kenya that sealed Ivory Coast’s qualification for the 2026 FIFA World Cup. Diomande was named to the squad for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations, where he scored against Burkina Faso in a 3–0 win. Since making his debut, Diomande has accumulated ten caps and three goals.

Personal life

Diomande has stated that he looked up to players like Ronaldinho, Vinícius Júnior, Leão, and Mbappé and that his idol is Cristiano Ronaldo.

A central part of Diomande’s life story is the tragic loss of his younger sister, who passed away suddenly during his childhood. Speaking to RB Leipzig media in interviews, he revealed, “It [his first goal] was for my sister, of course. I liked my sister a lot and lost my sister. Life is like this. I think of my sister a lot because today I have everything I can’t share it with her. My dream was making her happy and proud, but I can’t see her today,” said Diomande, regarding his sister, who died suddenly before he joined Leganés.
