What religion is Folarin Balogun?
Folarin Balogun is an American professional soccer player who practices the Christian faith. He was raised by a devoted Christian mother in London. Balogun plays as a striker for Ligue 1 club Monaco and the United States national team. He is a product of the Arsenal youth academy. In 2022, he joined the Ligue 1 side Reims on loan before moving to Monaco the next year for €40 million.
Balogun’s personal achievements include winning the AS Monaco Player of the Season award, being nominated for the Ligue 1 Goal of the Year, and earning a spot as a finalist for the U.S. Soccer Male Player of the Year. He has also represented both England and the United States at various youth levels, most notably making his senior tournament debut at the 2023 CONCACAF Nations League and leading the frontline at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
Early life
Folarin Jerry Balogun was born on July 3, 2001, in Brooklyn, New York, to Nigerian parents, Florence and Ben Balogun. His mother was seven months pregnant and visiting the U.S. from London when an airline prevented her return flight due to safety concerns over her being too heavily pregnant at that time, which resulted in Balogun being born in America. After returning to England as an infant, Balogun grew up in London and fell in love with football at a young age. When he was eight years old, he began playing at Arsenal FC’s famed Hale End youth academy.
Career
In 2008, Balogun joined Arsenal’s youth academy. He spent twelve years with the academy playing for under-9s all the way through to the under-23s and eventually the senior squad. Along the way, he became one of the most prolific scorers in Arsenal’s academy history, finishing as the club’s top scorer in the Premier League 2 on multiple occasions. He was part of Trevor Bumstead’s Arsenal U16 side that won the Liam Brady Cup before he went on to sign his first professional contract with the club in 2019 and renewed it until 2025 before eventually leaving.
In 2020, Balogun made his debut for Arsenal in a Europa League group-stage win over Dundalk before making his Premier League debut in 2021–22. However, with first-team opportunities limited by the presence of Alexandre Lacazette and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, it was clear the path to regular senior football at the Emirates would require loan spells elsewhere. He made just two Premier League appearances for Arsenal across his time on their books.

In January 2022, Balogun joined Middlesbrough in the Championship on loan until the end of the season. He made 18 appearances under Chris Wilder, scoring three goals and providing three assists. Again, in August 2022, Balogun was loaned to French club Reims for the 2022-23 season. He had an immediate impact when he scored on his debut for the club in a 4–1 defeat to Marseille. At the end of his debut season, he scored 21 goals in 37 Ligue 1 appearances, the highest single-season goal tally ever recorded by an American player in any of Europe’s top five leagues at that time. On February 1, 2023, he scored his first senior hat-trick in a 4–2 win over Lorient. After his successful season with Reims, Balogun returns to Arsenal for the 2023–24 season. Subsequently, he was reported to have attracted interest from Chelsea, Inter Milan, and Monaco.
In August 2023, Arsenal sold Balogun to Monaco for €30 million plus €10 million in add-ons on a contract running until June 2028. One month later, he scored his first league goal for Monaco, three minutes after coming off the bench in a 2–2 draw to Lorient. In his 2023-24 debut season with Monaco, he scored seven goals and five assists in 29 Ligue 1 appearances. His 2024–25 campaign was then derailed by shoulder and ankle injuries that limited him to just 13 Ligue 1 appearances and four goals, keeping him sidelined for long stretches. What followed in 2025–26 was nothing short of a resurgence. Balogun scored in eight consecutive league matches between February and April 2026, becoming just the third Monaco player in the 21st century to achieve that feat after Shabani Nonda in 2003 and Rony Lopes in 2018. He finished the season with 13 goals and four assists in 30 Ligue 1 appearances and was named Monaco’s Player of the Season. In total, he also contributed twice against PSG in the Champions League round of 16, having scored twice against the eventual European champions in that tie and added a goal and assist when the sides met again in Ligue 1 shortly after.
International career
Balogun played for both England and the United States at the youth level. He represented England at under-17, under-18, under-20, and under-21 levels, including at the 2021 UEFA Under-21 European Championship before he made the decision to commit to the United States senior national team instead. FA approved his one-time change of association, and he made his senior debut in the 2023 CONCACAF Nations League semi-final against Canada, going on to score in the final against Mexico on June 18, 2023. He won his first senior trophy in his second international appearance.
Balogun was part of the squad at the 2024 Copa America, where he scored twice against Bolivia and Panama in the group stage before injury disrupted his autumn 2025 schedule. He returned to form in September 2025, scoring against Japan in his comeback match, before netting against Ecuador and Paraguay in successive windows. On June 12, 2026, he scored twice on his FIFA World Cup debut against Paraguay.
Style of play
Balogun is a dynamic, modern center-forward who thrives on using his explosive pace and intelligent movement to tear open opposition defenses. His style is defined by his elite ability to play on the shoulder of the last defender, constantly making sharp, diagonal runs into the penalty box. He possesses a remarkably clinical finishing touch, capable of scoring with both feet from tight angles, which makes him a lethal presence inside the eighteen-yard box. He uses his speed to anchor a high-pressing system, leading his team’s defensive shape by aggressively closing down opposing center-backs and cutting off passing lanes. His high interception metrics are rare for a pure striker, showing a deep reading of the game that forces opponents into rushed clearances and turnovers deep in their own half
Personal life
Balogun was born in the United States to Nigerian parents and raised in the United Kingdom. His parents are of Yoruba heritage from western Nigeria. He has two siblings, an older brother, Royce Balogun, and an older sister, Tolani.
Balogun holds triple nationality: American, British, and Nigerian. In addition, he speaks fluent English and French.
