What religion is Marc Cucurella?

Marc Cucurella is a Spanish professional footballer who is widely reported to be a Christian. Marc Cucurella is considered one of the world’s best left-backs, and he has played for the football clubs Barcelona (2017–2019), Eibar (2018–2019), Getafe (2019–2021), Brighton & Hove Albion (2021–2022), Chelsea (2022–2026), and Real Madrid (2026–). He has been a member of the Spain national team since 2021 and has won more than 20 caps for the team. In 2026, Marc agreed to a £51.8 million transfer contract with Real Madrid, making a major return to La Liga right after the World Cup. Cucurella is an Olympic silver medalist and provided the crucial winning assist for Spain to conquer Euro 2024.

Contracts, Salary & Career Earnings

Across a dominant era of international silverware, youth academy performance ladders, and high-profile commercial deals, Marc Cucurella has grossed roughly $45 million in career earnings.

A homegrown prodigy, Cucurella graduated from Barcelona’s famed youth academy, signing initial senior terms worth roughly €4,000 per week. As he steadily carved out a role under top-flight teams like Eibar and Getafe, successive developmental extensions raised his basic wage to €45,000 per week, layered with lucrative individual match and trophy bonuses.

In 2022, following an outstanding Premier League campaign as an established starter for Brighton, he crossed into the major league earners by signing with Chelsea on a deal pacing him at £175,000 per week (around $11 million USD annually with bonuses).

In 2026, he reached a new financial peak by agreeing to a massive multi-year transfer to Spanish giants Real Madrid, elevating his baseline compensation into the absolute elite tier of the sport. Handled by top representation, his long-term commitments secure his financial future well into the next decade as a central pillar of the club’s ongoing project.

Real Madrid Contract

In a development confirmed just hours ago on June 14, 2026, Real Madrid have reached a verbal agreement with Chelsea to sign Spanish left-back Marc Cucurella. The transfer will be finalized after the World Cup concludes, for a reported fee of €55 million (£47.5m) plus €5 million (£4.3m) in add-ons. The agreement was first reported by Fabrizio Romano before being confirmed by ESPN, Sky Sports, and The Athletic within hours. The move makes Cucurella the most expensive left-back signing in Real Madrid’s history, with incoming manager José Mourinho.

Cucurella’s departure comes after four seasons and 163 appearances for Chelsea, having originally joined the club from Brighton in August 2022 for £60 million. In terms of his contract at the Bernabéu, specific wage details are yet to be officially confirmed, though multiple reports suggest his salary will be in the region of €10–12 million per year.

Barcelona and Eibar

Cucurella joined Espanyol’s youth setup at age eight before moving to Barcelona’s La Masia in 2012 at 14. He was promoted to Barcelona B in 2016 and made his professional debut on September 1, 2017, in a 2–2 draw at Granada in the Segunda División. He went on to help Barcelona B earn promotion to the Segunda División through the play-offs that season before making his first-team debut on October 24, 2017. He scored his first professional goal for Barcelona B on March 17, 2018, in a draw at Lorca, before Barcelona sent him out on loan to Eibar that August.

At Eibar, under the stewardship of José Luis Mendilibar, Cucurella’s game transformed. He made his La Liga debut on September 25, 2018, in a 1–0 loss at Espanyol and quickly became a regular starter, going on to make 31 top-flight appearances. He scored his first La Liga goal on the final day of the season, May 9, 2019, fittingly against his parent club Barcelona, opening the scoring in a 2–2 draw. Eibar were so impressed that they exercised their €2 million buyout clause at the end of the season, making him a permanent player, only for Barcelona to activate their own €4 million buyback clause just 16 days later, recalling him to Camp Nou before immediately sending him on a new loan, this time to Getafe.

Getafe

Cucurella arrived at Getafe in July 2019, with an option to buy set at €6 million and Barcelona retaining 40 percent of future transfer rights. He made his European debut on September 19, 2019, coming on as a substitute in a 1–0 Europa League group-stage home win over Trabzonspor. Across his debut season in 2019–20, he made 37 La Liga appearances, scored one goal, and led the entire league in interceptions with 58. Getafe finished eighth, which was their best result in over a decade and qualified for the Europa League. The following season in 2020–21 proved equally impressive. Getafe made his deal permanent for €10 million in the summer of 2020, and he went on to make 37 more league appearances, adding three goals and two assists. In April 2021, he made his 100th La Liga appearance during a 1–0 win over Cádiz.

Brighton and Hove Albion

In August 2021, Cucurella joined the Premier League club Brighton for around £15 million. He made his debut in a 1–0 win over Brentford on September 11, 2021, and never looked back. He started all 35 of the Premier League matches he was available for and recorded 93 tackles across the season, the fourth highest total in the entire division. On 7 May 2022, he scored his first goal for the club in a 4–0 demolition of Manchester United. At the end of the season, Cucurella won Players’ Player of the Season as well as being voted Player of the Season.

Chelsea

In August 2022, Brighton sold Cucurella to Chelsea for £55 million plus £7 million in add-ons, making him one of the most expensive left-backs in football history. Marc swiftly picked up where he had left off at Brighton, making his debut as a substitute against Everton and providing his first crucial assist for Sterling just a week later in a 2–2 draw against Tottenham. He scored his first Chelsea goal on March 17, 2024, in an FA Cup quarter-final against Leicester City and was named Player of the Match in Chelsea’s Champions League round of 16 second leg against Borussia Dortmund in March 2023. An ankle injury curtailed his 2023–24 season to just 21 Premier League appearances.

The 2024–25 season brought a decisive turning point. Cucurella started 36 Premier League matches for Chelsea, scoring five goals and winning the UEFA Conference League. He became the first Spanish player ever to lift that trophy with an English club. He also won the FIFA Club World Cup in the summer of 2025. In 2025–26, he made 34 Premier League appearances before Chelsea’s tenth-place finish and lack of European football the following season prompted their decision to cash in. Across four seasons, he made 163 appearances for the club and now heads to Real Madrid with a point to prove on the grandest stage of his career.

International career

Cucurella began representing Spain on the Spanish national under-16 team in 2014. He moved up to the under-17 team in 2014 and in 2015 played in the UEFA European Under-17 Championship and the FIFA U-17 World Cup. As part of the under-19 team, he helped Spain reach the final of the 2017 UEFA European Under-19 Championship in Georgia. Cucurella went on to make several appearances with the under-21 team and also led the under-23 Olympic squad to a silver medal in Tokyo before he was consistently called up to the Spanish senior squad.

He subsequently played in UEFA Euro 2024, where he was named in the Team of the Tournament for his exceptional defensive displays. Spain made it to the Euro 2024 final and defeated England 2–1, with Cucurella providing the historic, winning assist for Mikel Oyarzabal’s late goal. Following his European triumph, Marc continued his brilliant form into the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualification matches, scoring his first senior international goal against Bulgaria. He has officially been named to Spain’s final squad for the 2026 FIFA World Cup in North America.

Personal life

Marc Cucurella is married to Claudia Rodríguez. Together, the couple shares three children.

In early 2025, Cucurella and Claudia opened up to the public about their deeply personal family dynamics, revealing that their eldest son, Mateo, has autism.
