Alexander Isak is a Swedish professional footballer whose religion strongly indicates that he is an Oriental Orthodox (Eritrean Orthodox) Christian. Alexander Isak is considered one of the world’s best strikers, and he has played for the football clubs AIK (2016–2017), Borussia Dortmund (2017–2019), Real Sociedad (2019–2022), Newcastle United (2022–2025), and Liverpool (2025). In 2019, he joined the Spanish club Real Sociedad before moving to Newcastle for a club-record transfer fee. Liverpool then signed him in 2025 for a transfer worth £125 million.

Isak’s personal achievements include winning the Copa del Rey for top scorer in La Liga, being named Swedish Forward of the Year, and being one of six nominees for the PFA Players’ Player of the Year in 2025. Early life

Alexander Isak was born on September 21, 1999, in Solna, Sweden. He is the son of Eritrean parents, and he grew up in Solna Municipality in Stockholm County. His father, Teame Isak, who was a former teacher, fled Eritrea during periods of conflict and political instability (reports mention the 1980s or late 1990s, linked to the Eritrean-Ethiopian conflicts and civil war) and sought refuge in Sweden for a better life. When Isak was six years old, he began playing on the youth team of the Allsvenskan team AIK Fotboll (his boyhood club in Stockholm)

Career

Isak began his senior career with AIK in 2016, and on April 7th, he became the youngest scorer in the club’s history at the age of 16 years and 199 days. Scored 13 goals in 29 appearances. In January 2017, he signed a long-term contract with the Bundesliga club Borussia Dortmund. The transfer fee was undisclosed, but reports suggested that it was set at €9 million, the highest ever paid for an Allsvenskan player at that time. Notably, Isak had reportedly turned down a move to Real Madrid before committing to Dortmund. The team won the 2016–17 DFB-Pokal, though Alexander appeared only once in the tournament and was not part of the final squad.

Unable to break into Dortmund’s first team consistently, Isak was loaned to Dutch Eredivisie club Willem II in January 2019. The move proved transformative. He finished his second season with Newcastle as the club’s top scorer (21 league goals), equalling and then surpassing Zlatan Ibrahimović’s record for the most goals by a Swedish player in a single Premier League season. In December 2024, Isak scored his first hat trick for Newcastle in a 4–0 win at Ipswich Town, with his opening goal coming just 25.95 seconds into the match, the fastest away goal in Newcastle’s Premier League history. Personal life

During his time with Newcastle, Alexander rented a home in Darras Hall, Northumberland. On the evening of April 4, 2024, he left the property between 4pm and 10pm and returned to discover that his bins had been moved. A gang of four family members, described in court as “a professional group of travelling burglars,” had broken into his home through a glass door and carried out an untidy search of the property. They stole bespoke men’s jewelry from Frost of London worth approximately £68,000, along with between £5,000 and £10,000 in cash and his Audi RS6 estate car, with the vehicle worth £120,000, which was later found abandoned nearby. The culprits were siblings Valentino Nikolov, 32, Giacomo Nikolov, 28, and Jela Jovanovic, 43, along with Jovanovic’s son Charlie Jovanovic, 23.

Isak’s father, Teame Isak, is a respected teacher. Isak has no tattoos, and his shirt number 14 is a tribute to his idol Thierry Henry, whom he idolized during his early teenage years watching the Premier League.

Playing style

Isak has been described as a complete modern center-forward, combining an imposing 6’4″ frame with the technical finesse and mobility more commonly associated with smaller attackers. Despite his tall stature, he is surprisingly agile, enabling him to maneuver quickly in tight spaces and exploit gaps in defensive lines, while his long strides make him a constant threat in transitions. He prefers to operate on the last line, timing his forward runs to remain composed in one-on-one situations, and is capable of finishing with either foot across a wide variety of chances. Out of possession, his pressing is purposeful rather than aimless, targeting ball carriers to force hurried decisions, while his stamina allows him to maintain that intensity throughout matches. Isak is equally effective as a lone striker, using his strength to hold up play, or in a front two, where his pace allows him to punish defensive lines in behind.
