Bruno is considered to be one of the best attacking midfielders in the world. He joined Sporting CP when he was 5 years old, and he began his senior career with the club in 2017 and won back-to-back Taças da Liga in 2018 and 2019, as well as the Taça de Portugal, leading to him being named in the Primeira Liga Team of the Year and Primeira Liga Player of the Year in both seasons.

In 2020, Bruno signed a €80 million transfer deal with Manchester United; it stood as one of the most expensive midfielder transfers in football history. His average annual salary from the deal was €11 million.

On February 26, Bruno won his first trophy with Manchester United in the 2023 EFL Cup final, defeating Newcastle United 2–0 at Wembley Stadium. Bruno has represented Portugal at the under-19, under-20, under-21, and under-23 levels, for a total of 28 caps. In 2017, he was called up to Portugal’s senior team, and he subsequently played in the 2018 FIFA World Cup, 2018–19 UEFA Nations League, UEFA Euro 2020, and UEFA Euro 2024.

Early life

Bruno Miguel Borges Fernandes was born on September 8, 1994, in Maia, Metropolitan Area of Porto, to parents José Fernandes and Virginia Borges. From childhood, Bruno was a fan of Manchester United and Boavista. He grew up with his two sisters, Ana Catarina and Sara.

Early career

Fernandes began his youth career at local club Infesta before being offered a contract at Porto’s academy. However, his family could not afford the daily commute, so he joined local rivals Boavista instead, who offered transportation to training. At age 15, he was released by Porto following a trial. In mid-2012, a scout from Italian Serie B side Novara spotted him during an under-19 fixture, and he sealed a move to the club in August of that year at just 17.

Novara and Udinese

Fernandes joined Novara in August 2012 and was quickly promoted to the first team in Serie B, helping the club to fifth place and the promotion play-offs in his debut season. In summer 2013, Inter Milan and Juventus both wanted to sign him, but he chose Udinese instead, who promised him first-team opportunities. He made his Serie A debut in November 2013 and scored 10 goals across three seasons at the club.

Sampdoria

In August 2016, Fernandes moved to Sampdoria on loan with an obligation to buy, scoring five goals in 33 appearances and helping the club finish tenth in Serie A.

Sporting CP

Fernandes returned to Portugal in June 2017, signing for Sporting CP for €8.5 million. He scored 16 goals and registered 20 assists in his debut season, winning back-to-back Taças da Liga in 2018 and 2019 and the Taça de Portugal, and was named Primeira Liga Player of the Year in both seasons. In 2018–19, he scored a record 33 goals in all competitions, the highest by any midfielder in Europe in a single season.

On 15 May 2018, he was among several Sporting players attacked by supporters at the club’s training ground after the team missed out on Champions League qualification. Despite the ordeal, he played in the Taça de Portugal final the following weekend. Bruno broke several records after agreeing to a new five-year contract with Sporting that included a €100 million release clause. He became the highest-scoring Portuguese midfielder in a single season, scored in six straight games, and became the third Sporting player in the 21st century to score in six or more consecutive games.

He was appointed club captain in 2023 and led United to the FA Cup in 2023–24, assisting the crucial goal against Manchester City in the final. On 20 September 2025, he made his 200th league appearance for the club against Chelsea, scoring his 100th goal for United in a 2–1 win. On 7 February 2026, he became the second fastest player to reach 200 goal contributions in Manchester United’s history, with 104 goals and 96 assists. On 15 March, he set a new United record for most assists in a single Premier League season, surpassing David Beckham’s mark of 15 set in 1999–2000. On 17 May, he equalled the all-time Premier League record for most assists in a single season with 20, a mark previously shared by Thierry Henry and Kevin De Bruyne. International career

Fernandes represented Portugal at the under-19, under-20, under-21, and under-23 levels including at the 2016 Summer Olympics before making his senior debut in November 2017. He was selected for the FIFA World Cup in 2018 and 2022 and for UEFA Euro 2020 and 2024. He has earned 87 senior caps, scoring 28 goals, and been named in Portugal’s 2026 FIFA World Cup squad.

Goal celebration

Fernandes’ signature goal celebration sticking his fingers into his ears was inspired by his daughter Matilde. The gesture became one of the most recognisable celebrations in the Premier League. He also has tattoos of both his children on his arms, alongside the number 8, a tribute to his birth date and his father’s shirt number during his playing days.

Sponsorship

Fernandes is sponsored by sportswear company Nike. He is also partnered with EA Sports and several Portuguese brands, with his commercial activity growing steadily in line with his profile as one of Europe’s most recognisable midfielders.

Personal life

Fernandes met his wife Ana Pinho as teenagers in Maia. They dated for eight years before marrying in December 2015 in an intimate ceremony in Portugal attended by around 350 guests. Their daughter Matilde was born in January 2017, and their son Gonçalo followed in 2020, the same year Bruno joined Manchester United.

In June 2025, Fernandes turned down a contract offer worth €100 million from Saudi Pro League side Al-Hilal and chose to remain at Manchester United. In addition to his native Portuguese, Fernandes is fluent in Spanish, English, and Italian, and holds both Portuguese nationality and a deep connection to his working-class roots in Maia.
