What religion is Bruno Guimarães?
Bruno Guimarães is a Brazilian professional footballer who is a devout Catholic Christian. After Newcastle secured Champions League qualification and won the Carabao Cup, Guimarães was seen giving thanks to God through public acts of prayer by walking the length of the St. James’ Park pitch on his knees. It mirrored former Leeds United winger Raphinha’s knee-walk at Brentford’s Gtech Community Stadium three years ago when the Whites managed to stave off relegation on the final day of the season.
Bruno Guimarães currently plays for the Premier League club Newcastle, where he earns an annual salary of £8.3 million. Before joining Newcastle, he played with the Ligue 1 club Lyon and the Campeonato Brasileiro Série A club Athletico Paranaense, where he set the Newcastle United club record for the most consecutive Premier League starts by an outfield player. Bruno has also represented the Brazilian national team since 2020.
Early life
Bruno Guimarães Rodriguez Moura was born on 16 November 1997 in the São Cristóvão neighborhood of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Bruno’s father, Dick Guimarães, was a taxi driver. His grandfather emigrated from Spain to Jarra, which allowed Bruno to hold Spanish citizenship alongside his Brazilian nationality. He started playing futsal with Flamengo at an early age. He then joined Audax, and on April 9, 2015, at the age of just 17, he made his professional debut by playing the last three minutes in a 2–1 Campeonato Paulista away win against Bragantino. When he turned 19, Guimarães was promoted to the main squad for the 2017 campaign after heavily impressing scouts during that year’s Copa São Paulo de Futebol Júnior.
Athletico Paranaense
As a youth, Guimarães played for Audax in Rio de Janeiro. When he was 17 in 2015, he made his debut for Audax before joining Athletico Paranaense on loan in 2017, with the move made permanent on March 1, 2018. During the 2018 season with the club, he made a total of 58 appearances across all competitions, scoring 5 goals and providing 2 assists. His contribution helped Athletico win the Copa Sudamericana as well as winning the Campeonato Paranaense. During the 2019 season, Guimarães made 43 appearances, scored five goals, and contributed three assists as Athletico won the Copa do Brasil and the J.League Cup/Copa Sudamericana Championship. He earned significant successes with the club, including being named Man of the Match in the Copa do Brasil final first leg against Internacional and being named in the 2019 Campeonato Brasileiro Série A Team of the Year.
Lyon
In January 2020, Guimarães signed a four-and-a-half-year contract with AS Monaco. He made his first debut for the club the following month in a Champions League match against Juventus. Later on, he went on to make 3 appearances in Ligue 1 that truncated season before settling in properly for the 2020–21 campaign, where he scored three goals and added an assist in 33 Ligue 1 appearances, including a brace against Lorient. He had an impressive second season in 2021-22, making 20 Ligue 1 appearances and contributing three assists, as well as featuring in 5 Europa League matches and adding two more assists. Analysts rated him the best central midfielder in Ligue 1 outside of PSG that season, with Lyon demanding “€45m or nothing” for his signature.

Newcastle United
Guimarães was transferred to the Premier League club Newcastle United in September of 2022. He made his debut for the club as a late substitute in a 3–1 win against Everton. His first goal came with a powerful back-heel volley in a 2–1 victory over Southampton on March 10. One month later, he scored his first brace in a 2-1 victory over Leicester City, with his second goal coming in the 95th minute to win the game. Guimarães made an immediate impact on the club’s survival battle, helping them retain Premier League status in his first season.
In 2022–23, he helped Newcastle qualify for the Champions League for the first time in 20 years. In October 2023, he signed a new five-year contract at St. James’ Park running until June 2028, with a £100 million release clause included in the deal. He was appointed club captain ahead of the 2024–25 season and became the first Newcastle captain in 54 years to lift a major trophy when he led the club to the EFL Cup with a 2–1 victory over Liverpool in the final. In 2025–26, he has continued his excellent form, recording 9 goals and 5 assists in 28 Premier League appearances, and won Newcastle’s official Player of the Year award at the end of the season.
International career
Guimarães has represented the Brazil national football team on many occasions, starting as a youth on the under-23 team and working up from there. He won an Olympic gold medal with Brazil’s under-23 side at the Tokyo 2020 Summer Games. Guimarães was called up to the senior Brazil squad for the first time in the summer of 2020. Two years later, he was part of Brazil’s squad for the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar, the 2021 and 2024 Copa América, and World Cup qualifying campaigns under both Tite and Carlo Ancelotti. As of 2026, Guimarães has earned over 40 senior caps for Brazil, and on June 6, 2026, he scored the opening goal for Brazil during a 2-1 friendly victory against Egypt.
