Leroy Sané is a German professional footballer who is widely reported to be a Muslim. According to reports about his upbringing, Sané decided to convert to Islam despite being born to a Christian mother and a Muslim father. Leroy Sané plays as a winger for the Süper Lig club Galatasaray. He also plays for the German national team and previously played for Bayern Munich and Manchester City. Among his many career achievements, Sané won the 2017-18 Premier League with Man City and was voted PFA Young Player of the Year.

Salary and Contracts

During his time at Schalke 04, Sané earned approximately £31,540 per week, around £1.6 million per year, before his move to Manchester City in 2016 more than tripled his wages to £95,000 per week, or £4.9 million per year.

In July 2020, Sané joined Bayern Munich for a reported fee of €60 million, earning £249,002 per week, approximately £12.9 million per year across his five seasons at the club. His full package at Bayern included a base salary of €15 million per year alongside €5 million in performance bonuses, with a special injury clause guaranteeing salary payments for up to nine months in the event of illness. Ahead of the expiry of his contract in June 2025, Bayern offered him a three-year extension until 2028 with a reduced fixed salary of around €10 million per year, and Sané indicated he was willing to accept a pay cut to remain at the club. However, an agreement was never reached. He left Bayern on a free transfer in the summer of 2025 and joined Galatasaray, where he earns a reported £186,751 per week, approximately £9.7 million per year. His total career earnings from playing contracts are estimated at well over €80 million, with additional income from his endorsement deal with Adidas.

Early life

Leroy Aziz Sané was born on 11 January 1996 in Essen, Germany. He was born to a German mother and a Senegalese father. He has two brothers, named Kim and Sidi, both of whom also play in the youth systems of German clubs.

Early career

Sané started playing football at a very young age. He joined the youth academy of SG Wattenscheid 09, one of his father’s former clubs, at age 5 in 2001.

Schalke 04

Sané progressed through the youth setups of SG Wattenscheid 09, Schalke 04, and Bayer Leverkusen before returning to Schalke’s senior setup in 2014. He made his senior Bundesliga debut for the club one month after and went on to make 47 appearances across two seasons, scoring eleven goals and registering 11 assists before earning a move to England.

Manchester City

In August 2016, Sané joined Premier League club Manchester City on a five-year contract for £46.5 million. In the 2017–18 season, he scored 10 goals and provided 15 assists in 32 Premier League appearances, winning the Premier League title and being named PFA Young Player of the Year, surpassing Harry Kane. He added a second Premier League title, two EFL Cups, and an FA Cup during his time at City before departing following a serious knee injury. He scored 39 goals across 135 appearances in total for the club.

Bayern Munich

Sané joined Bayern Munich in July 2020 for €60 million, making 223 appearances and scoring 61 goals with 55 assists across five seasons. He won four Bundesliga titles, the UEFA Champions League, the UEFA Super Cup, and the FIFA Club World Cup during his time at the club. His final season in 2024–25 yielded 11 goals and five assists in 30 Bundesliga appearances before he departed as a free agent in the summer of 2025.

Galatasaray

Sané joined Galatasaray on a free transfer in July 2025, signing a three-year contract until June 2028. In the 2025–26 Super Lig season, he has recorded seven goals and five assists in 28 appearances, helping Galatasaray clinch the domestic championship.

International career

Sané has represented the German national football team on many occasions, starting as a youth on the under-19 and under-21 teams before earning his first senior cap in November 2015. He won the FIFA Confederations Cup with Germany in 2017, scoring twice in the tournament. Despite being controversially left out of Germany’s 2018 World Cup squad by coach Joachim Löw, he returned to the national team and was part of the squads for UEFA Euro 2020, the 2022 FIFA World Cup, and UEFA Euro 2024. He has earned 72 caps for Germany, scoring 16 goals, and was officially named in Germany’s 26-man squad for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

Personal life

Sané’s father, Souleymane Sané, is a former Senegalese professional footballer who scored over 100 career goals and represented Senegal internationally, while his mother, Regina Weber, won a bronze medal in rhythmic gymnastics at the 1984 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles.

Sané is in a relationship with American model and influencer Candice Brook. The couple share a son together. Additionally, Sané holds both German and French citizenship through his parents, speaks German and French fluently, and has maintained an endorsement deal with Adidas throughout his professional career.
