Luis Díaz is a Colombian soccer left winger who is a Christian, specifically Roman Catholic. Díaz plays for the Bundesliga club Bayern Munich and the Colombia national team. Luis Díaz is considered one of the world’s best wingers, and he has played for the football clubs Barranquilla (2016–2017), Atlético Junior (2017–2019), Porto (2019–2022), Liverpool (2022–2025), and Bayern Munich (2025–present). He has been a member of the Colombia national team since 2018 and has won more than 70 caps for the team.

Luis Díaz is currently under a contract that reportedly runs until June 30, 2029, following his €75 million move to Bayern Munich in 2025. According to various sources, his base pay at Bayern stood around €269,000 per week ($312,000) and about €14 million per year ($16.2 million).

Early life

Luis Fernando Díaz Marulanda was born on 13 January 1997, in Barrancas, Colombia. He is the son of Colombian parents, and he grew up in Barrancas, a small and remote town located in the La Guajira region of northern Colombia. In 2015, he was selected to represent Colombia in the Indigenous Copa América in Chile due to his Wayuu ethnicity. In October 2023, both of his parents were kidnapped by the National Liberation Army (ELN) guerrilla group at a gas station in Barrancas.

Atlético Junior

Díaz began his senior career at Barranquilla FC in the Colombian second division before being promoted to Atlético Junior’s main squad in June 2017. He made his Categoría Primera A debut on 27 August, and he scored his first top-flight goal in a Copa Sudamericana win over Cerro Porteño. Over two seasons from 2017 to 2019, he made 67 appearances and scored 15 goals, playing a key role in securing the Categoría Primera A title in 2018, along with one Copa Colombia and one Superliga Colombiana.

Porto

On 10 July 2019, Díaz signed for Porto on a five-year contract for a reported fee of €7 million, with Zenit Saint Petersburg also pursuing him before compatriots Radamel Falcao and James Rodríguez convinced him to choose Portugal. In his debut season, he scored 14 goals as Porto won the Primeira Liga and the Taça de Portugal. He followed it up with 16 goals in the first half of the 2021–22 season before departing midway through, though he was still awarded a winner’s medal after Porto claimed a second league title. He scored 41 goals and 19 assists across 125 appearances in total for the club.

Liverpool

On 30 January 2022, Díaz signed a five-year contract at Liverpool for a reported €45 million, with €15 million in add-ons. He scored 41 goals in 148 appearances for the club, winning the FA Cup in 2022, earning man of the match in the final along with EFL Cup wins in 2022 and 2024, and the Premier League title in 2024–25, his personal best season with 17 league goals. During that time, he endured the kidnapping of his parents in October 2023, scoring against Luton Town in his return match and lifting his shirt to reveal the message “Freedom for Dad.”

Bayern Munich

On 30 July 2025, Bayern Munich signed Díaz for a reported €75 million on a four-year contract until June 2029, one of Bayern’s most expensive acquisitions ever. He scored on his competitive debut and netted just 15 seconds into a match against Eintracht Frankfurt on 4 October 2025, underscoring his explosive impact in the Bundesliga. One month later, Díaz scored twice in the first-half of the UEFA Champions League league phase match against Paris Saint-Germain, though he committed a foul that injured Achraf Hakimi and was sent off with a straight red card. In the 2025–26 season, he has recorded 15 goals and 14 assists in the Bundesliga and has already won the German Super Cup and the Bundesliga with the club.

International career

Díaz made his senior debut for Colombia on 12 September 2018 in a friendly against Argentina. He quickly established himself as a key figure in the national setup, and his first major tournament announced him to the world. At the 2021 Copa América, he helped Colombia finish third and was the joint top scorer alongside Lionel Messi, netting four goals in five matches. Díaz was also part of Colombia’s squad for the 2022 FIFA World Cup qualifying campaign, though Colombia ultimately failed to reach the tournament in Qatar. He returned to the continental stage at the 2024 Copa América, where he scored against Costa Rica and Panama as Colombia swept through the group stage and into the final before losing 1–0 to Argentina after extra time. In September 2025, Díaz helped Colombia seal qualification for the 2026 FIFA World Cup with a 3–0 win over Bolivia, providing the assist for the third goal. Afterwards, he said, “I’m really happy about what we’ve achieved. It’ll be my first time at a World Cup. I’m very moved by it.” As of 2026, he has earned 72 caps for Colombia and scored 21 international goals.

Personal life

Díaz married his childhood girlfriend, Geraldine “Gera” Ponce, in June 2025.

In 2022, Díaz partnered with his parents to launch a football academy in Barrancas, providing free training and scholarships to underprivileged children, and has also worked with UNHCR to support families displaced by Colombia’s armed conflict. His brother Jesús Díaz is also a professional footballer, currently playing in the Portuguese league.
