Viktor Gyökeres is a Swedish professional soccer player whose religion is not publicly known. Viktor Gyökeres plays the position of center forward for Arsenal of the English Premier League and also for the Swedish national team. Gyökeres is known for his elite goal-scoring, explosive pace, and physical, high-pressing style of play. He began his senior career with the Swedish club IF Brommapojkarna during the 2015–17 season. When he signed with Arsenal in July 2025, Gyökeres entered into a five-year contract. His contract with Brommapojkarna included a €1 million release clause, and Arsenal surpassed that amount, paying €63.5 million.
Early Life
Viktor Gyökeres was born on 4 June 1998, in Stockholm, Sweden. He began his youth football career with IFK Aspudden-Tellus in 2004. In February 2013, 14-year-old Gyökeres was discovered by Brommapojkarna and began playing on their youth squad and made his senior debut two years later. His father, Stefan Gyökeres, played football for IFK Östersund and Stugun in the 1980s and 1990s.
Career
Gyökeres’s early professional years were shaped by a series of loan spells designed to toughen him physically and give him competitive minutes. He spent time with St. Pauli, Swansea City, and Coventry City, experiencing mixed results but gaining valuable experience across England’s football pyramid. These seasons improved his strength, match awareness, and finishing under pressure, laying the foundation for his eventual breakthrough.
Coventry Breakthrough
Gyökeres returned to Coventry City on a permanent deal ahead of the 2021 season after signing a three-year contract. His performances earned championship minutes, and he exploded into full stardom during the 2021 to 2022 campaign with 17 goals in 45 league appearances. Over the next year, 2022-23, he was named the player of the month in November after scoring four goals in four games, leading Coventry to four straight wins during that period. Gyökeres produced 21 goals in 46 appearances, making him the second highest scorer in the league that year.
Sporting CP
On 13 July 2023, Gyökeres signed with Sporting CP for a reported €20 million (plus €4 million in bonuses). His arrival marked the beginning of a transformative era for the club. During his two seasons at Estádio José Alvalade, Gyökeres became the centerpiece of Sporting CP’s attack, mesmerizing fans with his dribbling and creativity. He won two Primeira Liga titles and one Taça de Portugal.
Gyökeres’s individual honors included winning back-to-back Liga Portugal Player of the Season awards (2023/24, 2024/25) and the 2025 Gerd Müller Trophy as the world’s top scorer. His 2024–25 season was especially memorable: he contributed 54 goals and 18 assists across all competitions. Over 102 appearances for Sporting CP, Gyökeres scored 97 goals and assisted 28 more, securing his status as one of the club’s all-time greats.
Arsenal
In the summer of 2025, after years of speculation about a potential transfer, Gyökeres joined Arsenal in a blockbuster move. He immediately adapted to the Premier League, scoring at an elite rate and maintaining his reputation as one of Europe’s most dependable finishers. His arrival gave Gunners a true center forward presence while providing Gyökeres an opportunity to compete for more major club trophies. His contributions extended beyond goals, as he became a creative hub in Arsenal’s buildup play and an experienced leader in the dressing room.
Sweden National Team
Gyökeres debuted for Sweden in 2019 and quickly established himself as the centerpiece of the national side. Gyökeres was called up to the Sweden national team to replace Zlatan Ibrahimović for the 2022 World Cup qualifying matches against Kosovo and Greece. He also played crucial roles in Sweden’s 2024 tournament campaigns, scoring four goals in a 6–0 Nations League home win over Azerbaijan, completing his first international hat-trick in the process.
Sweden coach Graham Potter named Gyökeres in Sweden’s 26-man squad for the 2026 FIFA World Cup in Canada, Mexico, and the USA. Gyökeres was named alongside Alexander Isak to lead the Swedish attack.
