Rio Ngumoha is an English professional footballer who is a Christian. Rio was seen wearing “Ballers in God” wristbands during training. He once made a statement saying, “I belong to Jesus.” Rio Ngumoha is a left winger and attacking midfielder for the Premier League football club Liverpool as well as England’s national team. Rio spent his youth career with Chelsea (2016–2024), and he began his senior career with Liverpool in 2024.

Rio’s personal achievements include earning a senior England cap as the fifth-youngest debutant in history, making his Champions League debut as a teenager, and being nominated for the PFA Young Player of the Year. He has also represented England at various youth and senior levels, most notably playing at the 2025 UEFA European Under-17 Championship and the June 2026 World Cup warm-up match against New Zealand.

Contract & salary

Rio Ngumoha signed his first professional contract with Liverpool in September 2025, committing his future to the club until June 30, 2028. Under this agreement, he earns a weekly wage of £1,000, amounting to an annual salary of £52,000. This contract gave him a massive 360% pay rise from his previous academy scholar salary of £14,400 a year. Early life

Rio Chima Ngumoha was born on August 29, 2008, in London, England, to Nigerian immigrant parents. His father is Nigerian, originally of Igbo descent from Abia State, and his mother is of Guadeloupean descent. Because of his parents, Rio holds both Nigerian and French nationalities alongside his British citizenship. When Rio was eight years old, he began playing on the youth team of Chelsea.

Chelsea

Ngumoha played youth football with Chelsea, having previously had brief spells at Arsenal’s and West Ham’s youth teams. In April 2024, he scored in Chelsea’s 3–1 win over Wolves in the U17 Premier League Cup final. Chelsea attempted to keep him by offering a new contract, but Ngumoha, described by former Chelsea captain and academy coach John Terry as “a very ambitious boy who wanted to play first-team football and believed that was his pathway into Liverpool’s first team.” Rio’s move sparked fury at Stamford Bridge, with Chelsea allegedly banning Liverpool scouts from attending youth fixtures at Cobham in retaliation.

On February 5, 2026, a Professional Football Compensation Committee tribunal ordered Liverpool to reimburse Chelsea a minimum of £2.8 million for Ngumoha’s training and development while with the Blues. Terry, who coached Ngumoha during his under-14 years, said of the departure, “There is going to be many more over the years that, as an academy you lose, but there’s always one that you think, ‘I’m a bit gutted we missed out on that one.'”

Liverpool

In September 2024, Ngumoha arrived at Liverpool’s academy. He was featured for the under-18s, under-19s, and under-21s during 2024–25. In the summer of the 2024–25 season, Rio was handed his senior debut by Arne Slot when he started against Accrington Stanley in the FA Cup in January 2025. On his Premier League debut as a substitute away at Newcastle United in August 2025, he scored in the 100th minute to secure a 3–2 win, becoming Liverpool’s youngest ever goalscorer at just 16 years and 361 days old. The goal also made him the fourth youngest goalscorer in Premier League history behind Max Dowman. Days after the Newcastle goal, on his 17th birthday, Ngumoha signed his first professional contract with Liverpool. He subsequently made his debut in European competition, appearing for Liverpool in the Champions League against Atlético Madrid. Across the 2025–26 season, he has made 19 appearances in the Premier League, scoring two goals, and has also featured in Champions League, FA Cup, and EFL Cup fixtures. To sum his debut season up, Rio won the Premier League title in 2024–25 and the J. League World Challenge trophy in 2025.

International career

Ngumoha has represented England at various youth levels, including under-15, under-16, under-17, and under-19 levels, earning double-digit caps across those age groups with multiple goals. He is also eligible to represent Nigeria through his family connections but has remained firmly committed to England’s pathway throughout his development.

Ngumoha made a historic debut for the senior England national team on June 6, 2026, becoming the nation’s 1,300th senior international player. At just 17 years and 281 days old, the Liverpool winger became the fifth-youngest debutant in England national team history. In May 2026, he was also called up by manager Thomas Tuchel to join England’s pre-World Cup training camp in Florida. After his debut match, Real Madrid star Jude Bellingham presented Rio with his debut international cap following the team’s 1-0 friendly victory over New Zealand.

Personal life

Rio’s mother was right by his side when he signed his massive first professional contract with Liverpool FC in 2025.

He moved from London to Liverpool when he switched teams. He currently lives in club-approved housing designed to keep young players safe and focused. Like all teenage players in England, Rio has to balance intense football training with school.
