What religion is Kobbie Mainoo?
Kobbie Mainoo is an English professional footballer who is widely believed to be a Christian. Mainoo showed respect for teammate Amad Diallo’s Muslim faith by moving him away from champagne spray during 2024 FA Cup celebrations (alcohol is forbidden in Islam). This demonstrates awareness and consideration but does not indicate Mainoo’s own beliefs. Claims on some social media that he is Muslim appear to be unfounded. Additionally, he has been seen with Manchester United teammates, including Bruno Fernandes, reciting the Lord’s Prayer during pre-season.
Kobbie Mainoo plays as a central midfielder for the Premier League club Manchester United and for the England national team and is considered by many as one of the brightest young midfield talents in the world. Among his career accomplishments, he won an FA Cup and an EFL Cup with Manchester United and was named the Jimmy Murphy Young Player of the Year in 2023.
Contracts, Salary & Career Earnings
Kobbie Mainoo’s career earnings changed dramatically after his new deal with Manchester United. He signed a long-term contract with Manchester United in April 2026 that runs through June 2031. The contract is worth approximately £35–52 million in total, depending on bonuses and performance-related incentives. Under the new agreement, Mainoo is believed to earn a base salary of £150,000 per week, equivalent to approximately £7.8 million per year before bonuses. With performance incentives included, his annual earnings could exceed £10 million. The contract represents a significant increase from his previous deal, under which he reportedly earned around £20,000–£25,000 per week after progressing from Manchester United’s academy into the first team.
Early life
Kobbie Boateng Mainoo was born on 19 April 2005 in Stockport, Greater Manchester, England, to parents of Ghanaian descent. He was raised in Cheadle Hulme, a suburb of Stockport, alongside his older brother, Jordan Mainoo-Hames, who later gained public attention as a contestant on the fifth series of Love Island. He began his youth career with local club Cheadle & Gatley before moving to Failsworth Dynamos, where he often played as a forward. When Mainoo was six years old, he was identified by Manchester United scouts, and he officially joined the club’s academy a few years later. Mainoo studied at Ashton-on-Mersey School, a school closely associated with Manchester United’s academy system.
Career
In May 2022, Mainoo signed his first professional contract with Manchester United. He was a member of the under-18 team when they won the 2021–22 FA Youth Cup. After his impressive performances, he earned an opportunity to train with the senior squad, and on 10 January 2023, he made his first-team debut in a 3–0 EFL Cup victory over Charlton Athletic. Following a breakthrough campaign in Manchester United’s academy system, Mainoo became a regular member of the first-team squad during the 2023–24 season. Despite suffering an injury during pre-season, he returned to establish himself as one of the club’s key midfielders. He scored several memorable goals, including winners against Wolverhampton Wanderers and Liverpool, and capped off the season by scoring in Manchester United’s FA Cup final victory over Manchester City and was awarded Man of the Match. At the end of the season, he was nominated for the Premier League Young Player of the Season award alongside Erling Haaland and Alexander Isak.
In April 2026, he signed a new long-term contract keeping him at Old Trafford until 2031. By that stage, he had made close to 100 senior appearances for the club and was regarded as one of the cornerstones of Manchester United’s future.
At the international level, Mainoo represented England at the Under-17, Under-18, and Under-19 levels before receiving his first senior call-up in March 2024. He made his England debut against Brazil at Wembley Stadium and was named man of the match in his first international start against Belgium just days later. His rapid rise earned him a place in England’s squad for UEFA Euro 2024, where he became a regular starter and helped the Three Lions reach the final.
On 21 May 2026, Mainoo was officially selected by manager Thomas Tuchel for England’s 26-man squad for the 2026 FIFA World Cup in the United States, Canada, and Mexico. Mainoo will wear the No. 16 shirt for the Three Lions during the tournament. He is currently fighting alongside players like Jude Bellingham and Declan Rice for a starting spot in England’s heavily stacked midfield as they prepare for their opening group-stage match against Croatia.
Personal life
Kobbie Mainoo was born to Ghanaian parents, Felix Mainoo and Abena Herold. Aside from his brother, Mainoo also has two sisters named Ama and Efia.
In November 2024, Kobbie Mainoo bought a spacious, modern £1 million detached family home in Wilmslow, Cheshire. According to reports from The Sun, Mainoo is currently in a relationship with Layla Roye.
